“The Carer in the Cotswolds”

The Open Book That Is (Not) The NHS

There’s a language that holds good within our hospitals,
Not like the English you and I acclaim,
Where words receive entirely different meanings
(So ‘You hold grudges’ is their take on ‘I lay blame’)

Where our reports are downgraded to read ‘accounts’,
And what you’ve seen and heard is thereby palmed away
As inadmissible in terms of taking action,
Leaving the miscreant to see another day

The dictionary they use quite runneth over
With such queer unilaterally loose reclassifications;
What you were taught should be defined as evidence
It somehow lists instead as ‘allegations’

It’s a well thumbed, trusted volume for all seasons,
One they’ll not hesitate an instant to apply;
A book most often open at the page incorporating
By far their favourite word – and that’s ‘deny’

What they can’t, or won’t, explain, they keep at arm’s length,
Twist and turn the issues with which you wrote in
As adeptly as might any politician
In a special language – one we know as ‘spin’

Well, ensure you don’t lose this in the translation,
Don’t fail to take on board what’s only reasonable;
The public’s had enough, it wants equality;
It wants an NHS where justice is achievable
