“The Carer in the Cotswolds”
The Power Of Life And Death
They did away with executioners years and years ago,
The death sentence was abolished by a bill,
Yet there are people in this world, you simply wouldn’t know,
That hold the power of life and death over you still
You have no reason to suspect that it could ever prove so mean,
The very opposite, injustice isn’t due –
You mind your business, do no harm and keep your nose clean;
Do nothing to it, it won’t do anything to you
You imagine your own home affords a haven,
That your family gives protection, and believing
That the law itself is there to stop such craven,
Hostile, malign influences interfering
Wrong!
The NHS is of course somewhere that allots
Care and treatment – ‘Ever known it not to try?’;
But which with certain groups too often judges what’s
In their ‘best interests’ is to simply…let them die!
Correct!
The discriminated parties? Why, the elderly –
Most particularly those for whom dementia’s come;
‘Euthanasia’ they won’t hear of, but there can surely seldom be
A clearer, more convincing rule of thumb
Than to ask ‘Would this be done if they were younger?
Say, twenty years? Or if they still retained their wits?’;
And the answer’s, shamefully, ‘No’, they’d be left longer,
No thought to hasten their demise, leave you in bits
A single person’s all it takes to pass decisions
Of such magnitude, and no record’s kept of frequency;
They’re called ‘consultants’ – and it’s time for some restrictions;
They can’t be judge and jury, it’s indecency
You can protest all you like, you’ve reached your limits,
They’ll never change their minds, all’s set in stone;
You’ll be lucky to be spoken to ten minutes;
You’ll never hear from them again, you’re on your own
Make at least one other signature mandatory
Before such dangerous curtailments are put through;
And remember, this scenario’s not defamatory –
This could happen any day, to yours, or you…
